That reliable old machine still makes parts beautifully, but the computer bolted to it may be the softest target in your plant.
The machine works, so what is the problem
Plenty of plants run equipment that is twenty or thirty years old and still holds tolerances better than newer gear. The mechanical side is fine. The issue is the controller and the PC attached to it, often running an operating system the vendor stopped supporting long ago.
Unsupported software stops receiving security fixes. So while the iron is solid, the brain controlling it has known weaknesses that can never be patched away.
Why ripping it out is rarely the answer
Replacing a working machine to satisfy a software concern is expensive and often unnecessary. The replacement may not exist, the lead time may be a year, and the proven process gets disrupted. The goal is not to retire the machine. The goal is to protect it where it stands.
How to protect what you cannot patch
The proven approach is isolation. Put the aging machine in its own network zone where it can only talk to the exact systems it needs and nothing else. If it does not need internet access, do not give it any.
Lock down the USB ports, remove general-purpose web and email use from the attached PC, and keep a current, tested image of the controller so you can rebuild it fast after a failure or disk crash. None of this touches the process that makes your parts.
