The Medical Devices on Your Network That Traditional IT Ignores
The infusion pumps, imaging machines, and vitals monitors on your network are computers too, and most of them are quietly unprotected.
They are computers, and they are everywhere
Infusion pumps, ultrasound carts, lab analyzers, vitals monitors, and imaging systems all run software and sit on your network. Each one can be a way in, yet most traditional IT setups treat them as appliances and leave them alone.
The problem is that these devices often run old operating systems the manufacturer will not let you patch, and they cannot run normal security tools. They are both fragile and exposed, which is the worst combination.
First, find out what you have
You cannot protect what you cannot see. The starting point is a real inventory: every connected device, what it runs, what it talks to, and who supports it. Most organizations are surprised by how many devices show up that no one was tracking.
Keep that inventory current. Biomedical equipment moves between rooms, gets added during a busy quarter, and sometimes connects to the network without IT ever being told.
Separate them from everything else
Since you often cannot patch these devices, the next best move is segmentation: put them on their own isolated network zone so a compromised pump cannot reach the EHR, and a phished email cannot reach the pump. This single step contains most of the damage.
Pair segmentation with strict rules about what each device is allowed to talk to. A vitals monitor has no business reaching the open internet, and blocking that closes a common path.
